Stefan Mitrović has become the latest player to join the ranks of top league footballers with his appointment as the manager of French club AS Monaco.

The 45-year-old Serbian was appointed by the French side on Sunday, and he is expected to take charge from the bench this season.

Mitrović, who previously managed Barcelona, has been linked with the job at AS Monaco since the summer, but he had not taken up the offer.

However, the move comes as a surprise to many fans of both Monaco and Barcelona, who have long admired Mitrović's ability to lead teams to success.

The Serbian has won three La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey titles with Barcelona, and has also represented his country at international level.

He has worked closely with the likes of Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann,Serie A Overview and has proven himself to be a talented coach.

"I am very excited to be joining AS Monaco, where I believe we can achieve great things," Mitrović said in a statement.

"I will do everything possible to help the team reach its goals and continue to improve."

The appointment comes just days after the club announced that they were set to sell their mainstay goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon, to Italian club AC Milan.

Mitrović's arrival is sure to add some much-needed stability to the coaching staff at AS Monaco, who currently have only one goalkeeper in their squad.
